Style blending modern decorative pillows have taken on many roles in the home, being utilized as an added comfort to a sofa, a spot of color in a corner or a matching theme in a room but the simplicity and distinction of today’s throw pillows, table runners and lamp shades are gaining popularity in the art and design world as never before bringing a taste of magic to modern.

Once limited to canvas, dramatic designs and drawings can now be found in the home by award-winning artists on items such as chair cushions, table runners, blankets, pillows and other useful trimmings. Designers Eye is a Swedish textile manufacturer who has burst onto the decorating scene, led by Lena Bergstrom, award-winning designer. Pillows created out of felted, virgin wool is their trademark, using gentle, soothing colors in stripes and floral, adding a touch of elegance to any setting.

Mibo, founded in the UK, was the brainchild of TV and Film Art Director, Madeline Rogers. Noticing that her flat lacked a certain light in furnishings, she set out to rectify the problem. Wallpaper and modern pillows are part of her creativity using vivid, yet subtle hues in her accessories. Linen and cotton cushions bring a joyful brightness to any section of a room needing a pick me up. Another favorite is Madeline’s impressive tile tattoos that literally bring out the life in a kitchen or bath.

The United States soon entered the realm of pillow design when a couple of friends from Atlanta, Georgia, decided to quit their jobs and follow a dream into the textile and design world. In 2001, Modern Basics started by Page Ikeda and Rhonda Holloway, steadily marched forward a little at a time but possessing a great work ethic and a knack to make a difference in modern style. Crib bedding and pillows are now found in many contemporary specialty stores throughout the nation.

The zabuton, which simply means ’seat-cloth-sphere’ has been a tradional type of floor seat/pillow in the Orient for centuries. It was just a matter of time before the tradition of floor sitting began to spread to America. Unlike a fluffy, overstuffed throw pillow, the zabuton is flatter, made of muslin and has a life span of eight to ten years. The fantastic part is that any pillow cover can be created to match any taste for use in your TV room or to seduce your guests around a crackling fire.

Art no longer just belongs on a wall as a way to enjoy the best of beauty and creativity. With the flow of new designers discovering a different type of canvas in material, modern designer pillows can become dramatically stunning. The contemporary age is booming with fresh ideas and energetic inventiveness in home decor and pillow covers are a perfect route to take in providing the public with functional, mood pleasing workmanship. Allow yourself to browse the invigorating artists of today in textiles and let yourself live comfortably with art.

Getting the best out of painting with wall stencils

By admin · January 31, 2009 · Filed in House and Home · No Comments »

Interesting and exciting patterns can be created with the use of one or more wall stencils, just follow our basic steps:

Use a quality template

Wall stencil you are buying must be quality and from a reputable seller.

Read their feedback from previous customers. Having the stencil design soak through with paint in the middle of the masterpiece would be highly annoying. Likewise, not knowing the order in which to paint multi-layer stencil designs could lead to a disaster. So instructions, and a picture of the finished work, are essential on all but the easiest stencil designs.

Use the proper tools

Apply stencil paint using either a brush, sponge or a roller. Select a soft but stiff, round brush for stencilling and apply the paint carefully to avoid a build up of excess paint at the edge of the stencil design, else you will find the paint creeping under and spoiling the effect.

If the stencil design requires the use of multiple colours, consider the use of an applicator per colour rather than trying to wash it in between each colour. Washing the brush or roller will only lead to water being carried onto the paint, which could result in a run.

Use the correct technique

If you want to avoid paint being dragged under the stencil, always start your stroke at the edge of the stencil design and work towards the centre. Thus paint is being pulled away from the actual stencil design, rather than dragged towards it. The paint should be applied in thin layers, allowing each to dry between applications, if required. Again, overuse of paint is risking allowing the paint to run under the stencil design and spoil the effect.

Don’t move the stencil

Tape the stencil design in place firmly, but using a suitable easy to remove adhesive tape that won’t damage the areas already painted. And if you are taping an area that has already been painted, make sure it is well dry and firm!

Clean the stencil before moving on

When you are using the stencil design once on a job isn’t sufficient, then ensure that it is properly cleaned before repositioning it ready for the next use. Any excess paint might just run off onto the next part of the pattern and look unsightly, spoiling the beautiful stencil effect.

And do not forget that you can always find a great assortment of stencil designs to choose from. From aquatic, to Childrens’ to out of this world space themes. Let your imagination run wild and enjoy your stencilling effects!

Kitchen Remodel Can Update Busiest Room

By admin · January 28, 2009 · Filed in House and Home · No Comments »

After several years of looking at the same old kitchen cabinets, countertops and appliances, it may be time for a kitchen remodel to update the most used room in the house using build a house project. While many will consider a fresh coat of paint a good first step, ask the person who uses the room the most for opinions. They will know how extensive the kitchen remodel needs to be to make it more attractive and more user-friendly.

Making the room more attractive and appealing for all the family members is great, but making it more convenient in which to work will make it even better. Organizing the cabinets and appliances to be within reach for the job being performed can almost make kitchen duties fun. During a kitchen remodel, replacing or refinishing cabinets and countertops can make a lasting impression, but do not forget the kitchen flooring, making sure it matches the new color scheme.

If the decision is made to also replace the countertops, consider replacing the sink and faucets as well. A scuffed sink with tarnished fixtures will stand out like a sore thumb, especially following an extensive kitchen remodel. Replacing hardware on refinished cabinets can also add to the new look.

Organizing Appliances To Existing Space

Simply because a stove or refrigerator has always been in a particular position, does not mean it cannot be moved in your basement. About the only rule in appliance arrangement during a kitchen remodel is to separate the stove from the refrigerator by at least one cabinet and try to keep the stove away from the sink. Heat from the stove may cause refrigeration problems and water from the sink splashing on the stove is never a good thing.

Other than those guidelines, the kitchen remodel can be done to make living more convenient for everyone. Ideally, the refrigerator is typically placed close to a door and a counter to make putting groceries away more convenient, taking less steps from the car to the unit. There is some debate on whether dishes should be stored over the dishwasher for convenience when putting them away, or near the stove for the convenience when serving meals.

Silverware and pots and pans are other items that can cause dissent, but pots and pans will normally be located near the stove or oven and silverware closest to the dishwasher for putting them away. These are all things that can be planned out before performing the kitchen remodel in your house plan to make sure everything has a place and it is convenient to keep everything in its place.

Antique Bath Vanities Are A Low Cost Alternative To Remodeling Your Bathroom

By admin · January 27, 2009 · Filed in House and Home · No Comments »

Are you interested in making your bathroom more aesthetically appealing, more welcoming, more beautiful? Of course you are, but how should you approach this potentially disastrous issue? You can start with a charming small bathroom sink vanity. These are remarkably useful and charming features that not only look great, but they often significantly enhance the market value of your home and property as well. And the best part is you’re all but guaranteed to find the perfect small bathroom sink vanity for your home. Just peruse the vast variety of online retailers and their unique catalogs and find a great vanity. Below I will outline just a few of the most common bath vanity types.

There may be no better way to give your home a quaint, rustic appeal than to install bathroom double vanities. These bathroom double vanities are specifically designed to lend a traditional appearance to your bathroom without sacrificing any modern bathroom efficiency. They are most often constructed from hardwoods, such as oak, cherry, mahogany, maple, and teak. Wood double bathroom vanities are sealed and finished with a protective layer that keeps them water resistant. Still, it is essential that you take particularly good care of your wood vanity, because these are a bit more susceptible to water and mildew damage than other small bathroom sink vanity types. Make sure that you wipe away any water that may have collected on your vanity counter top. Additionally, when the time comes to clean your vanity, make sure that you use only those cleaning solutions that do not harm wood and wood finish. With proper care, your antique bath vanity can stay beautiful for a long time.

Not all vanities are designed with an antique look in mind, of course. For the hip home designer, there are a number of modern antique bath vanities available. These especially sleek and streamlined bath vanity cabinets are essential design elements in a classy, modern home that possesses a contemporary, clean, or perhaps industrial personality. They are most often available with metal counter tops, such as stainless steel or even copper. But, for a more natural feel, many modern vanities come with cool stone counter tops; dark stone materials like granite or onyx give your room a more robust, masculine aesthetic, while softer stones like marble are polished, charming, and elegant in appearance. Some of these antique bathroom vanities use tempered glass sinks to further improve the functional charm of your bathroom.

Of course, space is always an issue in any home remodeling, and the space in your bathroom is of particular importance. For smaller bathrooms, such as those often found in apartments or small houses, consider investing in corner bathroom vanities. Corner vanities are just as useful and elegant as their larger vanity counterparts, but they are engineered to fit snugly into any corner in a way that is charming yet not too distracting or invasive.

For a larger bathroom or (particularly) a shared bathroom, it may be worth your while to look into a double small vanity. These antique bath vanities feature two cabinet spaces, two sinks, and often two mirrors as well. Double bathroom vanities allow both you and your partner to use the bathroom at the same time, without all the fuss associated with sharing a sink. Imagine an end to the “whose turn is it” question, as both you and your house mates can accomplish daily hygienic tasks simultaneously.

Do 3M Furnace Filters Really Work?

By admin · January 25, 2009 · Filed in House and Home · No Comments »

3M Furnace Filters are provided by the 3M company and are believed to be of the best quality when you are choosing furnace air filters. When you run a furnace in your house, you need to be sure to change the filter each month so that the furnace will function in the right way. If you decide not to change the filters, they will soon get very clogged and nasty; not only will the quality of the air suffer, the furnace will actually sustain damage, as well. This is not good for you or your bank account.

When you get 3M furnace filters, you can feel sure you are using some of the best available air filters. They can be found in a plethora of different sizes. The most time-effective thing to do is to measure your furnace air filter to find out which size you want. Furnaces all come with differing areas to place the filter, and you will be required to learn how the filter goes in and out of the furnace. This is very easy to accomplish - even a grade school student could manage to do this.

After you have learned which type of filter you need and the size, you can find 3M Furnace Filters on-line. When you shop online, you can most likely get a nicer price than when you shop for air filters in a brick and mortar store. If you buy them in bulk, you can keep even more money. As you need to replace them every month, it is a good idea to pick up a lot of them at a time.

There are quite a few 3M furnace filters that are washable and are meant to be used again and again as long as you wash them monthly. But you won’t be able to use these forever. Eventually, you will have to change 3M furnace filters at least every 12 months. These are really quite inexpensive and will keep your furnace operating much more efficiently.

Even if you enjoy central air conditioning, you need to replace your furnace filters during the summer months. Since the air conditioning begins by coming through the furnace, you would be wise to replace the furnace filters when you are running your air conditioning. This will help the air conditioner to run more effectively, as well, and you will see a decline in your electric bill. The more congested the furnace filter is with dirt and dust, the more your air conditioner will run to cool down the house because the fan will have to continue to move air throughout the house. And the air will be less-than-health air. You need to be diligent in changing your air filters.

Getting a 3M Furnace Filter is a good choice, as you can feel confident that you are receiving quality air filters from a brand that you can count on. The 3M company has been in business for a long time and makes quality items that are designed to keep away dust and dirt. The 3M filters are among the best air filters on the market.
